This exhibition explores how contemporary fashion has adopted a new aesthetic, where elements of dressmaking have become design components of the finished product. Other themes include the history of cotton and remaking clothing conventions such as the corset, the dress and the suit. Contemporary examples by designers such as Comme des Garçons, Maison Martin Margiela, Yohji Yamamoto, Alber Elbaz for Lanvin, Nicholas Ghesquière for Balenciaga and John Galliano for Christian Dior provide examples of the continuation of this aesthetic. Discover the work of internationally acclaimed artist Yinka Shonibare MBE, with this major solo exhibition encompassing 12 years of his artistic practice. From his eye-catching headless mannequins to engaging photographic narratives, Shonibare explores ideas about contemporary African identity, the legacy of European colonialism, class structures and social justice. Shonibare refers to himself as a ‘postcolonial hybrid’, having been born in England and raised in Nigeria before relocating to London at age 17.
