With the launch of her first collection as recently as 2007 at Rosemount
Australia Fashion Week, Donna
Sgro has taken great strides in creating her fashion
design label from the ground up. Reflecting her independent and creative
attitude, Donna has designed a label that reflects a spirit that is
quirky, playful, colourful and light-hearted. Donna studied Fashion
& Textiles at the University of Sydney, Technology, where she
graduated with First Class Honours in 2007. Whilst studying she built
a solid portfolio including having her work displayed in exhibition
at the Powerhouse Museum and winning the Fresh Fruits Competition.
Grounding her fashion
label in an aesthetic that is thouroughly modern, expressive and inquisitive,
Donna designs garments that are tailored in a contemporary and sportive
way. The garments are sleek and refined with surprising juxtapositions
of colour and cut. Donna’s unique use of colour gives the garments
their individual and energetic attitude, defining the spirit of each
collection. The garments then become cherished and
special items that have a longevity while still being creatively unique.
Donna has already been building an international profile, with press
in the USA, UK and Singapore. The label continues to grow steadily
with significant international opportunities.

Products are directional and ultra-modern
with striking expressions of design refinement. The aesthetic derives
from modernism and includes the use of abstraction of visual elements,
strong colour, bold and graphic lines, geometric shapes and minimalist
silhouettes. There is a unique approach to colour that is central
to the concept of the brand, and gives the brand it’s individual
and energetic attitude. Colour and colour relationships enhance the
visual and emotional response to the products and express their individuality.

The concept of the Donna
Sgro brand is to create products that are beautifully executed and
worn as cherished design pieces that extend beyond the limits of
a single season. The product designs are directional and contemporary
but not trends focused. A holistic approach is taken in the execution
of the designs – a high level of consideration and attention
is given to details and sourcing quality fabrications and trims,
great care is taken to develop appropriate seam finishings and internal
detailing to create an end product that is well made and beautiful
inside and out.
Traditional tailoring techniques from both menswear and womenswear
are researched and, when combined with contemporary and sportive
fabrications, create new and colourful, innovative products. The
product ranges are designed for what can be called a ‘street-couture’
market – the products are fun, young-spirited and have an
energy that relates to the freshness of the street, while also having
a highly considered attention to detail, quality fabrication and
cut.
Each piece includes a high-quality finish at every level of execution
and fabrications are currently sourced from Japan and New Zealand,
together with trims from Japan and Switzerland, tailoring made locally
in Australia and a attention to cut and detailing is evident in
each design.
