Known for
her bold use of colour and whimsical prints – the muse for Ruby
Smallbone’s Autumn Winter 2008 Collection matures,
embracing a sultry seriousness. Moving away from floral prints and
feminine accents, clean lines and a masculine-sharp edge dominate
the winter collection. A luxury sports feel emanates from speed stripes
and racer cuts and the inclusion of Ruby’s own ‘Ice-Skater’
print.
Smallbone’s influences range from kitsch 1960’s horror
films, 1970’s television glamour and 1980’s electro punk
- winter 2008 is no different. A trademark of Ruby’s collections
is the presence of items influenced by icons from her favourite cult
movies and this collection sees Jennifer Connelly’s character
‘Sarah’ inspire the ‘Labyrinth’ dress from
the film of the same name.

The winter collection also displays Smallbone’s experimentation
with contrasting textures and fabrics. Dramatic oil-slick fabric in
black and electric lime jersey opposes a demure matte cream and buttercup
yellow. In beautiful combination, vibrant candy stripes in violet,
mustard and gray are subdued by flowing silk fabrics, softening the
clean lines.
Ruby displays her unique eye for design by incorporating a mottled
charcoal angora into the winter collection, emerging in a cosy cropped
jacket and a luxurious zip-front dress, which doubles as a coat. The
Ruby Smallbone woman gets her armour.
